How Little things Reflect the True Discipline in Fasting

Ikkz Ikbal ✉

The month of Ramadan holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide, encapsulating the core values of fasting, mercy, forgiveness, self-reflection, and character development. It offers a chance to strengthen our bond with Allah SWT through the teachings of the Qur’an and supplication. Ramadan presents an opportunity for cultivating self-discipline and enhancing one's character. In the context of Ramadan's essence and self-introspection, it is essential to consider the significance of small actions. Beyond mere abstinence from food and drink, Ramadan serves as a time to nurture discipline and accountability in all walks of life.

Avoid unnecessary online activities, such as updating statuses or sharing stories during Sehri and Iftaar. It is not obligatory, despite the societal perception that being offline during these times implies not fasting.

Reduce mobile phone and social media usage. While we may already refrain from watching unfiltered videos, shorts, and reels during Ramadan, it is important to also limit aimless scrolling and practice digital fasting or minimalism.

Although we may not completely filter social media content, we can certainly cut down on screen time to minimize distractions during prayers and other acts of worship.

Prepare your favourite dishes this Ramadan, but do so in moderation. Instead of wasting time deciding what to cook and eat each day, eat mindfully to maintain a consistent Ramadan schedule. Prioritize spending time with your family. While decorating your dining table with delicious meals, remember to also extend kindness to your neighbours, the less fortunate, and those in need during this holy month. Share your blessings with others by helping them have a fulfilling Ramadan. Ramadan instils in us the values of generosity and compassion.

Refrain from sharing pictures of your Iftaar and Suhoor tables or posting status updates on social media. Everyone's circumstances differ, so it's best to avoid such displays.

Opt for simple, light meals during Iftaar to maintain energy and a positive mindset for Taraweeh and night prayers, enabling a deeper spiritual connection without feeling sluggish.

While sleeping is considered an act of worship during Ramadan, remember that excessive sleep alone is not beneficial. Trim your sleep schedule to allocate more time for prayers, Quran recitation, and supplication.

Ensure discipline in mosques, particularly during Iftaar. Instead of causing disruptions with chatter, prioritize dua and Quran recitation to uphold the sanctity of the mosque and honour the essence of Ramadan. Establish a Discipline and Maintenance Committee in each mosque to maintain order.

Embrace newcomers during Ramadan and show appreciation without asking intrusive questions. This month is about unity and drawing closer to Allah SWT collectively.

For regular attendees of the mosque, perform ablution at home before arriving to ease congestion and ensure convenience for guests and passersby needing ablution facilities.

The women in our households diligently prepare Sehri and Iftaar, investing significant effort to ensure everything is ready on time. They deserve respect, admiration, and gratitude. Assist them without hesitation; there should be no reluctance in supporting women in the kitchen. Encouraging and appreciating their efforts is a commendable quality.

For the women in our homes, it is important not to waste water and electricity during Ramadan, as it is considered a sinful act. Authorities should ensure consistent water and electricity supply, particularly during Sehri and Iftar times.

While hosting Iftaar gatherings at home or in mosques is acceptable, consider reaching out to neighbours or organizing Iftaar parties for those in need as a gesture of kindness and appreciation.

Use this holy month to cultivate positive habits that can be sustained throughout the year, such as focusing on health goals like weight loss. Encourage willpower and action to initiate beneficial practices during this blessed time.

Educate children about the significance of Ramadan, instilling in them an understanding of its virtues and blessings from a young age. Prepare them to appreciate the essence of Ramadan even before they reach the age of obligation, nurturing qualities of goodness, discipline, and responsibility.

Shopkeepers should sell essential goods at fair prices during Ramadan, avoiding exploitation by setting inflated rates. Selling items at minimal profit margins enables even the less fortunate in society to afford their household expenses.

In interactions with hardworking individuals striving to provide for their families, refrain from bargaining unfairly. Showing compassion and support for those working diligently reflects positively on society.

This Ramadan, prioritize spreading love and assistance unconditionally. Engage in acts of kindness with the expectation of divine rewards.

Wake up slightly earlier for Suhoor, even if just a few minutes, to engage in Tahajjud prayers and supplication. Tahajjud is a highly esteemed form of worship beloved by Allah SWT.

Remember that during Ramadan, the reward for every good deed is multiplied seventy times. Engage in acts of goodness known only to you and Allah SWT, anticipating abundant blessings.

May this Ramadan bring unprecedented peace into your life – a tranquillity that nourishes the soul and strengthens your connection with the Creator. May this month be filled with joy, serenity, contentment, mercy, and countless blessings.
